Description
This circa 1930 photograph shows the 50-room Ryde Hotel in Ryde, California. Built in 1927, at the zenith of the Prohibition era, the Art Deco-style structure hosted an illegal basement saloon or "Speakeasy," where liquor and jazz flowed amply. Notables like Novelist Jack London, 31st President Herbert Hoover, and actors/entertainers Al Jolson, Lon Chaney, Clark Gable and Rita Hayworth all spent time at the Hotel. The hotel was designed by Sacramento architect and engineer Jens Petersen.
