Description
Interior of L.J. Bentley's store on Yale Avenue, the first self serve grocery store in Claremont. Canned goods and boxed goods as well as fresh produce and grains line the shelves. Three figures stand in the center of the store by a large scale. Signs and American flags hang from the ceiling and light fixtures. A caption accompanying the negative says, "First Self Serve Grocery Store, 1917. Claremont's first self serve grocery store featuring staples and produce was opened by L.J. Bentley on Yale Avenue at the present site of The Danson. This photo was taken shortly after opening in 1917. Pictured are Mr. L.J. Bentley, his son Warner, and Grace Friedman, daughter of the owners of Claremont Bakery. Today the third generation of the Bentley family maintains the business on the corner of Bonita and Yale." This caption was used for the photo while on display in Claremont City Hall in 1976.
