Description
The top row of figures shows three women. The woman on the left wears a white off-the-shoulder evening dress with full skirts, a fitted bodice, and short sleeves. Wide lace ruffles edge the sleeves and run along the neck, over the shoulders, and upper arms. The woman wears ruffle-edged short white gloves and a white decorative hair cloth festooned with cascading white flowers. The middle woman wears a large, patterned green shawl or voluminous cape over an off-the-shoulder dress. Her white bonnet is trimmed with a white plume, small white flowers, and a short lacy veil. The woman also wears wrist-length white gloves. The woman on the right wears a white off-the-shoulder dress with a ruched vee neck, short, ruffle-trimmed sleeves, and a corset-like bodice. She has ruffle-edged short white gloves, and a white lace headdress trimmed with pink roses that encircles the base of her head and hangs to her shoulders. The lower row of figures shows two standing women. The woman on the left wears a structured knee-length dark purple cloak. The cloak has three frog closures down the yoke, long square ends, and tasseled cord at the shoulders. It is edged in darker purple, the same color used for the yoke. Under her cloak, the woman wears a beige dress with a flounce at the hem, full sleeves, white cuffs, and a white lacy collar. She wears short white gloves and an off-white bonnet trimmed with a white plume and pink flowers. She holds a lacy white handkerchief. The woman on the right wears a deep pink cloak edged in ermine. Her dress is pale blue and pinstriped, with full skirts, white cuffs, and a scooped neck with a lacy white collar. An oval brooch is pinned to her collar, and she wears white gloves and black-tipped shoes. Her round blue bonnet ties under the chin and is decorated with pink flowers and a blue plume. "1840" has been written in pencil in the upper left of the image.
