After abandoning a mining enterprise Bishop joined a battalion of Indian hunters who sought to oust The natives from Yosemite Valley. Bishop was appointed to the position of Office of Indian Affairs in California by President Milliard Fillmore and he engaged in numerous expeditions throughout the Western U.S. He worked in public office for many years before establishing his residence in San Jose in April of 1867.
