Description
The Araki ranch was a Japanese owned farm. The family owned several acres in Berryessa, and they cash leased other properties in Milpitas, and near their family ranch. In 1942 the Araki family faced forced internment as a result of World War II. Suyetaro Araki attempted to consolidate his land holdings and his son Harry, arranged with a "trusted" white businessman to run the farm in their absence. Suyetaro died at Heart Mountain. Harry and his mother returned to claim their property in 1945, only to discover that their trusted friend transferred ownership of the property to his name. See: Timothy J. Lukes and Gary Y. Okihiro, "Japanese Legacy; Farming and Community Life in California's Santa Clara Valley 91985), p. 122.
