Description
In this three-part oral history conducted by Nancy MacKay, June Watanabe discusses her life and career. The first interview focuses on June's early life: her years in Heart Mountain Internment Camp and return to Los Angeles after the war, her early dance studies and professional life as a dancer, and the beginning of her career at Mills College. The second interview focuses on her years at Mills College, including descriptions of the dance department and faculty over the years; the evolution of her creative work; and launching her own dance company. The third interview focuses on June's choreographic process, and on individual choreographic works. In this interview she eloquently shares how the influences in her life come together to inform her choreographic process, and how she has returned to her Japanese heritage and Noh for inspiration.
