Description
Photograph of a Spanish cannon on a hill in Monterey where a fort once stood, ca.1900. The cannon, made in Spain in 1620, rests on a wooden gun carriage and is pointed towards the ocean. On the right side of the picture, the city of Monterey wraps its way around the bay, its light colored houses and few trees curving along the crescent shaped shore. Beyond the mouth of the cannon is a pier, jutting out into the water past the edge of the picture. There is another pier further away on the bay, and in the background, a tall ridge towers over the town below.
