Interior view of Divine Saviour Catholic Church, looking toward a small shrine of/for Our Lady of Guadalupe as well as a baptismal font located to the left of the altar. "Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe", or "La Virgen Morena" (The brown-skinned Virgin) is a 16th century Roman Catholic Mexican icon depicting an apparition of the Virgin Mary. She is Mexico's most beloved religious and cultural image. A baptismal font is a church fixture used for the baptism of children and adults. Many Christian denominations have simple fonts consisting of a pedestal and holder for a basin of water (usually a liter or two) and most are made of marble, wood, or metal. The shapes can vary; some are 8-sided as a reminder of the "new creation" and some are 3-sided as a reminder of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Ghost). These fonts are usually placed at or near the entrance to a church's nave to remind believers of their baptism as they enter the church to worship. These fonts are intended for baptisms using a non-immersion method, such as the sprinkling (aspersion) or pouring (affusion) of holy water. Divine Saviour, built in 1907 and located on the corner of Cypress Avenue and Idell Street, was the 13th Catholic parish established in the city of Los Angeles. Photo dated: April 2007.
