Photograph of a man cutting a tree for insertion of the bud, ca.1910. The man bends down at left and delicately cuts the tiny trunk of the new tree. Rows of identical trees can be seen into the distance. When ready for "budding," the young tree is given two incisions in the form of a cross and the bark is loosened.
