Title supplied by cataloger. Santa Catalina Island, often referred to as just "Catalina", is a rocky island located approximately 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles. The island is 22 miles long and 8 miles across at its greatest width. Avalon, or Avalon Bay - the only "official" city on Santa Catalina Island, is a rural waterfront town with the usual tourist-oriented businesses and services lining the coastline. Beside Avalon, the only other center of population is the small, unincorporated town of Two Harbors on the island. As of the 2000 census, there were approximately 3,696 people residing on the island. Aerial view of Santa Catalina Island, surrounded by the vast and empty Pacific Ocean. Though in this shot the island appears to be uninhabited, it is actually a very popular vacation spot with over 3,000 permanent residents. Photograph dated December 2, 1955.
