Description
Shown in circa 1970, as viewed from the western banks of the Sacramento River, is California Interstate 80 and the Pioneer Memorial Bridge. 17,000 tons of steel went into building the structure, which was completed in 1966. It holds distinction for being one of the first bridges to use curved steel beams. The bridge also stands at least 55-feet above the river to accomodate boat traffic. The structure came to supercede the Tower Bridge as the primary portal between West Sacramento and Sacramento.
