Description
Speechly (1733-1819) was the gardener to the Duke of Portland, to whom the book is dedicated in appreciation of his support and encouragement and use of "his Grace's nobel library." The treatise is divided into four books: book I, The Vine ;Book II, The Vinery ;Book III, Grafting ;and Book Iv Vineyards. Edward Hyams in his work Grapes under Cloches refers to the small but admirable body of English writing on the subject of viticulture of which he states: "The best of them all is that of Speechly, already mentioned, a model of the sound, practical, well-written and beautifully printed manual." Speechly's treatise was well received and second and third editions were published in 1805 and 1821. An attempt to determine through the British Library the number of first edition copies published was unsuccessful because norecords survive on the printing firm of G. Peacock. -- James M. Gabler, Wine into Words, page 265.
