Description
Photograph of crosses marking graves within a plot bordered by a white picket fence, ca.1898. There are seven wooden crosses, and an eighth one painted white. On the mounded graves in front of them are clear bottles and other glass containers, broken plates (white) and pieces of white pottery. One of the crosses has an alarm clock (3:20) at its base. The cross in the foreground has an alarm cross (6:58) hanging from it. The ends of this cross, both horizontal and vertical, are forked, creating a ribbon-like effect on the horizontal arm. The horizontal arm of the cross behind it is cut to produce a three-pointed edge on each end. Luiseno (Cupeno?) was moved here in 1903 (Bull 30, p.192).
