Title supplied by cataloger. In 1927, after many years of brick making experience and the investment capital from an oil strike on family property, Robert Higgins started his own brick company. The first Higgins Brick & Tile Company plant was located in Gardena (2217 W. 17th St.) and another plant was started in Torrance a few years later. Around 1944, Robert passed the growing company business on to his two sons, Bob and Walt Higgins, both of whom had spent their entire lives working in the brick business helping their father produce and sell the bricks. Growing demand dictated that the company continue to grow to meet the needs of an ever expanding construction industry. Soon after, the Higgins brothers opened up plants in Santa Monica (2600 Colorado St.) and Monterey Park (4700 Ramona Blvd.). The four plants combined were supplying around 60 million bricks per year to the local market. The company continued to grow over the years, and in 1962, Higgins Brick finished construciton of their state-of-the-art brick plant in Chino, California. The facility was built on one-hundred plus acres of high quality clay. The family still owns and operates the family brick business and continues to be an innovative force in the industry today.
