Description
Article by Charles Handy on the evolution of the modern workplace and how advances in technology have brought new developments as well as limitations to work and life. Handy states that, while technology has made the work environment easier in some respects, it has also eliminated certain work functions and positions. He proceeds to state that new jobs will originate from areas in which technology won't change that much, namely, in personal service occupations, with most laborers overworked and underpaid. This prediction leads Handy to the paradoxical conclusion that the more wealthy British society becomes, the harder people seem to work and the less they enjoy it. He concludes the article suggesting a reconsideration of the place of work in civilized society.
