Description
1989-1211. In: [Scenes of Sacramento] [manuscript] / Eugene Walter Hepting. [Sacramento, Calif. : E. Hepting, 1938?], Vol. C, leaf 10. In foreground is a dirt country road leading into the distance; in the middle distance is a car heading out of the photograph by a railroad crossing sign; on the right in the foreground is a fence and a low structure behind it; in the background on the left is a group of trees, a two story house with a tree in front and across the road another tree in front of a barn and a large tree to the side. Walter Hepting was born in Sacramento (father was from Switzerland, mother from Germany). Worked for the State Treasurer's Office. Was amateur historian, collected old photographs and images of Sacramento. "The town of Hoboken, sprung up about the time of the flood of January 1853 when many people who were tired of floods in Sacramento moved to that point, this location was 'on the highland' between the 'Fort' and Brighton (on the present Meister propterty). Hoboken was then a corn-field, at one time during the month of January, 1853, it had not less than 200 to 250 residents, some twenty regular merchantile houses,some 4 or 5 taverns, resturants and lodging houses, and inumerable number of rum-mills and gambling dens."
