Description
Photograph of a young man pushing a wheelbarrow taxi, China, ca.1900. The young man is pictured at center, dressed in billowing pants, and a fitted long-sleeved shirt. A long braid of hair extends from the back of his cap, and he is turning his head to look at the viewer, although his body faces away. He grips the handles of the cart, which is comprised of a large, central wheel which juts up through the palette. Loose rope hangs from the guard rails to either side of the cart. In the background, a tall stone building gives way at right to a more ornate entrance, whose second level seems to be made of thatched grass or wicker. Two pagoda-like columns decorated either side of the door. Just to the right of this, a second young man can be seen shying away from the camera, his head bowed.
