Description
Title supplied by cataloger.
Palm Springs is a desert city in Riverside County, approximately 111 miles east of Los Angeles. It is one of nine adjacent cities that make up the Coachella Valley, and is sheltered by the San Bernardino Mountains to the north, Santa Rosa Mountains to the south, San Jacinto Mountains to the west, and Little San Bernardino Mountains to the east. This geography gives Palm Springs its hot, dry climate with 354 days of sunshine and less than 6 inches of rain annually. Palm Springs has become known as "The Playground of the Stars", and many famous people have had homes in the city or have vacationed here. Golf, swimming, tennis, horseback riding and hiking in the nearby desert and mountain areas are major forms of recreation. Some notable residents have included: (Actors) Alison Lohman, Chris Alcaide, Suzanne Somers, Vanessa Marcil; (Athletes) Alice Marble, Cub Swanson; (Musicians/Singers) Aubrey O'Day, Barry Manilow, Billy Steinberg, Frank Sinatra, Giles Hall, Josh Homme, and Sonny Bono, who served as Mayor of Palm Springs from 1988-1992. Presidents who have stayed in Palm Springs have included: Herbert Hoover in 1936; Dwight D. Eisenhower in February 1954; Harry S. Truman; John F. Kennedy in December 1962; Lyndon B. Johnson in February 1964; Gerald Ford (built a home here in 1978, after his presidency ended); and Ronald Reagan. And other important foreign dignitaries that have visited have included Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince Charles, among many, many others. As of 2007, population stands at 42,350.
View of an unidentified, but major, street that runs through Palm Springs. Several businesses can be seen on either side of the road, as well as numerous parked cars. A garage that offers "washing & greasing" is visible mid-center (on the right), while another establishment (red tiled eave) offers plumbing, as well as "cleaning & pressing" services.
