Description
Photograph of the first brick building (later torn down) at the University of Southern California, ca.1890-1895. About thirty-seven people stand in front of or sit in windows of the three-story building with square tower (peaked roof) over the main entry. Tall trees grow around the building. Dean Bovard (top hat and beard) is one of the people. A rail runs along the sidewalk which passes in front of the building. Two other smaller wooden buildings are visible through the foliage behind this building.
"The frame of the first building of the University of Southern California has been raised. A space has been left for the cornerstone, which will be laid by the Methodist Conference on Monday, August 6 (1880), with appropriate ceremonies. As this is the first university attempted at this end of the state the subject is one of great interest to all our citizens. Of the thirty lots set aside to be sold at $200 apiece to commence the building all but four or five have been sold. When they are disposed of the price will be advanced to $300." -- Newspaper clipping, 50 years ago, 8/2/1930.
