Shows Portola on lead horse wearing plumed hat. A retinue of solders, including one friar, follow Portola through grassy knoll. Mountains rise at left, ocean horizon visible at right. Attached text on verso, "The march of Gaspar de Portola is here recreated by the artist, W. Francis, to show the Spanish pathfinders approaching San Francisco Bay."
