Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. Do You Want to be Happy and Free? This is a booklet by Willard Johnson, published in New York City, circa 1942. The front cover features an abstract black & white sketch of people tossing their hats in the air. The back cover says "Take your choice -- misery and slavery or happiness and freedom". There is a black & white drawing of a man standing at a fork in a road; one path leads to a dark cloud, while the other path leads to sunshine. 5 x 6 in.
