Description
Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Exterior of Vernon Apartments, firemen working. Script reads, "A 45-year-old San Jose man is in Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital this evening suffering from burns incurred in an apartment house fire early this morning. Frank Sheehan, of 37 East San Antonio Street, Apartment 4, is listed in serious condition with burns over 15% of his body. Sheehan was found in the hallway of the Vernon Apartments by firemen answering the 6:15 am alarm. Extensive smoke and heat damage was done to the inside of Sheehan's 3-room apartment, but San Jose foremen contained the blaze before it could spread. Fire investigators suspect that the fire was caused by a lighted cigarette in an over-stuffed chair. According to their report, Sheehan had apparently gone to sleep while smoking." Segment 2 (sound): Interviews with two men talking about transportation in the Bay Area. Story reads, "The Bay Area Rapid Transit district will be ready to embrace a Santa Clara County system by 1971, according to BART General Manager B. R. Stokes. Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties declined to participate in the Bay Area system. In light of that, Stokes, who spoke in San Jose today, was asked what effect BART would have here. The President of the Rapid Transit System accompanied Stokes. Adrian Falk took issue with the local fear that all rapid transit would be simply to get people into and out of San Francisco." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Woman in wheelchair, dressed smartly in suit, wheeled out of elevator, through halls, scene in courtroom, woman is wheeled back out smiling, visits with her family. Story reads, "Co-ed Bernadette Henderson, in a dramatic courtroom confrontation, pointed out 21-year old Clarence McDowell as the man she saw loitering in the parking garage of the Sainte Claire Hotel moments before she was savagely attacked. The injured girl was wheeled to the courtroom of Judge Raymond Callaghan. She was accompanied by her mother, stepfather, and her fiancé, former University of Oregon basketball star Steve Jones. She is recovering from head injuries received when she was attacked last September after she drove to San Jose. The girl came to visit Jones, who was trying out for the San Francisco Warriors basketball team. In the courtroom prosecutor Harry Parker asked McDowell to stand. Miss Henderson looked at him for a moment, then said quietly, 'I remember him now.' McDowell is charged with beating the girl, then dragging her into a darkened stairwell, partially disrobing her, and attempting to criminally assault her. She remembers nothing from the time she stepped from her car until she awoke from a coma several weeks later. She was not cross examined by the defense. She was joined outside the court by her parents, and by Jones, who also identified McDowell as the man loitering around the garage before the attack. The girl, who was an honor student at the Davis campus of the University of California, suffered some brain damage. She is in an Oakland rehabilitative hospital, regaining the use of her legs." Segment 2 (silent): Shots of an empty Pacific Southwest Airlines gate inside airport terminal.
