Description
Standing on the ruins of the former Del Valle home near Castaic Junction on February 12, 1931 are (left to right) Jayhawker descendants: William A. Wiley, Long Beach, grandson of Capt. Asa Haynes; Alson S. Clark, Pasadena, illustrator of a book on Death Valley by William L. Manly and Mr. Bennett; Henry Doty, Lompoc, son of Capt. Edwin Doty, with rifle--the only gun carried clear through Death Valley; Frank Doty, Santa Barbara, President of Jayhawker Association and son of Capt. Edwin Doty; and E. W. Mecum, Sawtelle, Secretary of the organization and son of Charles B. Mecum. 32 survivors of the perilous journey stumbled into this area on February 4, 1850, when it was a part of the San Francisquito Rancho.
