A railroad accident on the South Pacific Coast Railroad's mainline crossing with the Southern Pacific Railroad a few hundred feet south of the Santa Clara depot. Locomotive Number 1377 of the Southern Pacific collided with another locomotive at this crossing with disastrous results. Both engines were heading north and arrived at the same time. The crossing was protected by a man in this signalman's shanty that barely missed being destroyed.
