"A roof, but no walls at Blama on the railway. Here I was entertained for two or three nights during my last journey into the Protectorate by Mr. Harrison of the Sierra Leone ? Colaing Co. who stands in the picture. The various S[ierra] L[eone] trading houses are establishing themselves ata ll the centres of trade along the railway, and have to be content with such accomodation until they can provide themsleves with better." Methodist Missionary work in West Africa had begun in 1811 with Coke's mission to Sierra Leone. A second station was opened on the River Gambia in 1821, and on the Gold Coast in 1834.
