"10." "Students on parade grounds in Canton City listening to speech of Liao Chung Kai, Minister of Finance, June 23, previous to parade before Shameen which resulted in the death of a Frenchment on Shameen, the killing of 53 Chinese students and wounding of 150 by machines gun fire, from Shameen side. Liao Chung Kai has since been assassinated, August 20th." "One banner -- about the center, has the legend -- 'Stop Shooting' 'Helping, or 'in sympathy with, the Shanghai incident'" [now Guangzhou] A large gathering of students outdoors to listen to speech. Many holds flags or fans.
Photo relates to the Shameen incident of June 23, 1925, part of a nationwide series of strikes and demonstrations precipitated by the killing of 13 labor demonstrators by British police in Shanghai.
