Description
In the wake of the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, Caltrans commissioned an oral history project to document the personal and professional experiences of Caltrans employees who worked to restore the State's damaged transportation system. At the time of this interview Lieutenant Frank Rodgers was a Toll Lieutenant with Caltrans at the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Rodgers was at work in his office when the earthquake happened. In this interview he describes what he felt and saw during the earthquake and the damage he saw afterwards. Roberts also describes what is was like to get all the cars away from the toll plaza and the bridge in the hours after the earthquake and the worries that the toll takers had for their families due to the seriousness of the situation. While the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was closed, Rodgers describes the challenges of toll collecting for the ferry system that was set up afterwards from Richmond, Jack London Square, and Alameda.
