Description
Description accompanying photos states: "Pile-driving goes on in the canyon-like sunken Interstate 5 freeway segment beneath the Capitol Mall. The Tower Bridge looming in the background is a visual reminder of the formidable engineering challenge inherent in buttressing the future 8-lane freeway against upwelling hydrostatic pressures from the nearby Sacramento River. The 16.2 million project is one of the largest "boat sections" of its kind in the state, with . . . extra thick concrete slabs and 80-foot deep piles needed to weight the freeway bed firmly into the West End earth."
