Description
Butterfield mail stages used this route starting 1858 to 1861. Before 1850, it was a Yokut Indian trail. In 1853-1855, a U.S. government survey established the route as the "Los angles-Stockton Road. In 1857, U. S. Congress gave a contract to John butterfield, granting 320 acres for each way station. Stations were about 20 miles apart and stages would change horses, drivers and food at the larger places.
