Description
Three detailed, close-up views of a batik design for a skirt showing patterns that have been drawn out with wax before and after they are dip-dyed in indigo. The two images on the left show batik designs prior to dyeing. The image at the right shows the batik design after dyeing. The batik design on the cloth depict variations of coin and shell motifs that are littered with dots symbolic of seeds (noob). The zig-zag lines create mountains separated by rivers referencing HMong diaspora and migration which has been defined by the crossing of rivers and settling into mountains (rooj). Typed label affixed to mat board beneath the photographs reads, "Detail of the center section design, before and after dying[sic] and washing. There are several designs that Pang uses...the water buffalo horn, snail, circle with plenty of dots in the center, squares. The batik design determines the placement of appliqué[sic] that will be sewn on later." Handwritten inscription at right of label reads, "1984 / Lewis." Date derived from inscription on mat board recto. Notes on verso read: "Making a skirt #8 [handwritten pencil, upper left verso]; Photo #32 Making a skirt & batik dying, before/after dying. L.F.C. [handwritten red and black ink, upper right verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, upper right verso]; HMong: Making a Skirt #9 (Photo 38), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4085.00* Fall 2002 [Printed label, middle right verso] " Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Batik Designs (2 photos)
