Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. A fundraising hayride, at Vernon and Central Avenues, to support Westview Hospital, a planned black hospital where black doctors and patients were welcome. The hospital, planned for 54th and Main Streets, was never built due to lack of money; the land was paid for and a basement was put in but there wasn't enough for the building.
