Description
This is a photograph of [left to right] Fr. Langley, Bishop Donaghy and Fr. Drew. Bp. Donaghy is confirming new Christians near Wuchow [now Wuzhou] after his release from Red China. Bp. Donaghy was "the first Maryknoll Bishop arrested in China. He was imprisoned for five months and then permitted to return to his mission in Wuchow [now Wuzhou]. However, the Communists had effectively hobbled his work by expelling all of his priests."
Born in Massachusetts, Bp. Donaghy came to Maryknoll in 1925 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1929. His first mission was to Kaying in 1929. His first yers were spent in Chongpu mission where he became proficient in the Kakka dialect. He also taught in the minor seminary. He was assigned to Tsungow and remained there for seven years. In 1935 he was appointed Vicar Delegate of Kaying. He was then appointed Vicar Apostolic of Wuchow and was consecrated a Bishop on September 21, 1939. During World War II he remained in Wuchow with his priests and performed relief work for the people. The Communists moved into Wuchow in 1949 and he was imprisoned for six months and then confined to house arrest in Wuchow. He was eventually expelled in 1955. -- Born in Maine, Fr. Langley came to Maryknoll in 1926 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1937. He was assigned to work in Wuchow, China until 1951 when he was jailed by the communists. He was released in 1952 and returned to the United States to do promotion work. H was assigned to Hawaii and chaplain of Thule Air Base in Greenland.
