Description
A person (possibly Pang Vang Khang, hands partially visible) draws out a batik design for the centerpiece of a baby carrier (Daim Nyias, Dlaim Hlaab Nyas). A grid is first scored over the fabric to serve as a guideline for the wax design to be drawn precisely. The lines shown will become the x-shaped gridded backdrops; the main motifs (which will receive appliqué) have yet to be drawn. Handwritten inscriptions beneath photograph read, "Waxing a design for a baby carrier (white fabric)," "Pang Vang Khang / Sacramento 1984." Typed label affixed to mat board above photograph (placed upside down) reads, "Applying the wax design for the batik center section of the baby-carrier. Either white or light blue fabric is used. Guidelines are scored on the fabric with a knife, and hot beeswax is applied with a batik spoon (raab dlav cab). No pattern or guide is followed; the designs are passed down from one generation to another."
Date derived from inscription on mat board recto. Image numbering omitted due to inconsistency on verso.
Notes on verso read: "Baby carrier #1 [handwritten pencil, upper left verso]; HMong Baby Carrier #10 (Photo 10), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4057.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]; L.F.C. [handwritten black ink, upper right verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, upper right verso]"
Numbering inconsistent on verso. Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
