Description
Photograph of a view of the Playa del Rey oil field near Venice, ca.1920. A forest of oil rigs meets the eye at center, panning out to fill both sides of the picture. In the foreground, the water stands between two shorelines, on the banks of which several tanks sit at left, while a lone derrick rises at right. A series of house-like sheds, tanks, pipes and stacks are found beneath the bases of the oil rigs, from which spew several plumes of smoke. A lone log floats across the water, while several strands of lines stream from utility poles across it.
