Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Berhanu Brian Alula was born in Ethiopia in 1952. His mother worked for the United Nations (economic missions for Africa). Berhanu studied pre-med in Addis Ababa and then switched to engineering at USC, beginning in 1984. He received his degree in 1988 and went to work for Hunter Engineering Co. He earned an MS degree in 1991.Berhanu married Yalemzewd Bitu Tirusew in 1994. They had known each other since childhood in Ethiopia. She migrated to Canada at the age of 18 and moved to California in 1990. She studied medical technology at Cal State, and the couple lived in Riverside. Berhanu Alula (right) is fed injera by his friend, Mehari, from their meal served on a mesob at a restaurant in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1990.
