The airplane known as the "Southern Cross" at Santa Maria Airport in Santa Barbara County. This Dutch Fokker airplane, fitted with three Wright Whirlwind engines, was purchased by two Australians, Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm in 1927. They were the first to fly across the Pacific from America to Australia. Between 1928 and 1935 they crossed the Tasman for the first time, and they broke the Australia to England record in 12 days, 21 hours, and flew numerous times across Australia in the Southern Cross. Photo dated: August 29, 1930.
