Description
Yoshiwara was the pleasure district of Edo, a city within the city surrounded by high walls and a water moat, which housed Edo's prostitutes from 1617 to 1957. Its courtesans were considered among the "Flowers of Edo." The print combines three different scenes. In the top panel a small dog peeks around the edge of a bamboo pail. The lower half depicts a man holding a fan decorated with calligraphy; the background behind him is covered with a woodgrain pattern. To his right a young woman looks around the edge of a screen behind a cloth-covered bench under a full moon. She wears elaborate hair ornaments, and extends her arm in an inviting gesture.
