Description
Looking south from Plaza Park, this circa-1977 street scene of the corner of Ninth and J streets features pedestrians and window-shoppers. A myriad of extended signs promoting a wide variety of businesses line the block above head level with the Jewelcraft Loans sign adding a garish touch to the dignified Ruhstaller Building. More traditional signs advertise the following businesses: Household Finance Company branch office at 1011 Ninth St., Taylor's Surgical Supplies at 1013 Ninth St., Rich Vision Center at 1015 Ninth St., Higaki Photo Studio at 1017 Ninth St., Markel Anton Custom Tailor at 1019 Ninth St., and the Salad Bowl at 1021-a Ninth St. The stucture was built in 1898 by Swiss emigree, brewer and capitalist Frank Ruhstaller.
