Description
A group of Contras stand idly at a field in El Porvenir Farm, located two kilometers from the Honduras-Nicaragua border, in June 1983. They are each holding FN FAL assault rifles. The second soldier from the left is wearing a gray fisherman's hat with a blue-and-white patch that reads "FDN," which identifies him as a member of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force. The third soldier from the left is wearing a black beret and has a field radio at his feet. The other two Contras are wearing caps. To the right of the group is a child soldier, who is standing as he holds his Kalashnikov rifle. In the background there lies a pile of debris and scrap metal. They are all part of the Nicaraguan Democratic Force (FDN in Spanish), a military organization whose members are informally known as "Contras."
