Description
Biography/History: Noel Rodriguez was born and raised in Los Angeles. He first experienced the labor movement at a young age through his father’s job as a lawyer for the United Farm Workers (UFW) in the Coachella Valley in Southern California. Noel sought to follow in his parents’ footsteps and devote his life to social change. After some periods of indecision, he found his calling as an organizer with UNITE HERE Local 11, where he has worked on hotel, food service, and casino organizing and is currently organizing director for the union.
Scope/Content: Interview Contents: Upbringing and his father’s refusal to fly bombing missions during the Vietnam War — Accompanying his parents in their legal work for the UFW in the Coachella Valley — Pitzer College and organizing with CISPES (the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador) — Early work experiences — Hired by Karl Lechow as an organizer with Local 11 in February 1991 — Boycott campaign against the Koreana Hotel (previously the Hyatt Wilshire) — Employers’ council fight — 1992 Los Angeles rebellion — Racial divisions impact on the union’s organizing — Miramar-Sheraton Hotel campaign in Santa Monica — Leaving the union for a brief period — Casino organizing in Palm Springs, California — Clandestine or underground organizing — Building worker committees and their role in organizing campaigns.
