Captain von Zelewsky lead three military companies against the Wahehe in the summer of 1891 because they would not surrender to the German colonial powers. On August 17th von Zelewsky and his troops were ambushed by several thousand Wahehe with spears. Von Zelewsky, nine Germans as well as 290 Askari (Swahili: soldier) were killed.
