Bust-length portrait. Signed "Yours truly A. J. Bayley" -- on front. Handwritten biography of Bayley on verso, dated Dec. 31st 1883.

Born in Athens, Vermont in 1827. Arrived in California in 1849 via the ship, Edward Everett. Spent time in mines. Settled in Coloma, managing the Winters Hotel; in 1850, settled in Pilot Hill, building hotel known as Oak Valley House. Elected to the Assembly in 1871.
