Forum for Middle East Research in Anthropology

Owning Institution: Claremont Colleges Library

About this Collection

The MERA Forum, newsletter of the Middle East Research Group in Anthropology (MERGA), was initiated by MERGA members at the 1976 annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association (AAA). The newsletter served as a resource for scholars engaged in research in the Middle East and was intended to meet a growing need for information on new areas of research, scholarly and cultural events, opportunities for funding, publication announcements, and calls for papers and collaborative research. The editorial board for the newsletter rotated and regional appointees coordinated potential AAA sessions, conferences, symposiums, and workshops relevant to the Middle East.

Original copies of the MERA Forum were preserved by Dr. Laurence Michalak, who was Vice Chair of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at UC Berkeley. Michalak was Editor of the MERA Forum from 1980 to 1987 and was the first editor of the Middle East Section column of Anthropology Newsletter when MERGA became the Middle East Section of the AAA in 1996. He generously scanned these issues for Lara Deeb, professor at Scripps College and Jessica Winegar, professor at Northwestern University and gave permission for their non-commercial use in our digital collection.
