Pitzer College Archives

Owning Institution: Claremont Colleges Library

About this Collection

The Pitzer College Archives contains materials from the history of Pitzer College. Founded in 1963 by philanthropist orange grower Russell K.Pitzer, Pitzer was the sixth school to join The Claremont Colleges consortium. Pitzer began as a women’s college with a focus on social sciences and community governance. Its first class graduated in 1968, and in 1970 it became coeducational.

The collection includes photographs by Arthur Dubinsky, yearbooks, student handbooks, newsletters, memorandums, course catalogues, and ephemera. Many of the items represented in the Digital Library have appeared in exhibitions in Pitzer’s Skandera Hall. There is an emphasis on the early years of Pitzer College, such as images of buildings under construction, campus life, and John W. Atherton, the school’s first president.
