Description
“This shows a town called Binchow in the Ashiho mission district in north Manchuria, during a severe winter, notice the deep snow. The city gate is seen in the centre of the picture. When the photo was taken the thermometer stood at about 30° below zero. [Part?] o[f] the difficulty was to get the picture snapped before the fingers turned dead white, which is the first sign in getting them well frozen.” View of a town in a snowy landscape. Binchow lies in the present day Heilongjians province and was an outpost of the Ashiho mission. James Stobie (b.1869) was appointed to Manchuria in 1894 and served in the Ashiho station with his wife Katherine Kirk Paton.
