Description
Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989
Shirley Muldowney delighted in beating male opponents in the macho sport of top-fuel drag racing. At speeds of over 300 mph along the quarter-mile track, she won the National Hot Rod Assn. world championships three times (1977, 1980, 1982). In 1983, Muldowney's life became a bio-pic in the film "Heart Like a Wheel" (starring Bonnie Bedelia). She and her hot-pink dragster retired in 2003, after one final race in Pomona. Photo dated: October 10, 1976.
