Description
Panoramic view of Culver City, with homes and businesses taking up every square inch of the city as far as the eye can see. Two billboards are visible on the lower left, advertising "Peets wonder soap" and "Culver City Speedway. Sun Mar. 6". The Los Angeles Speedway in Culver City was an auto-racing venue that was in existence from December 14, 1924 until March 6, 1927; the site later became a movie studio - one of many that called the city home. Founded by Harry Culver in 1913, Culver City became incorporated on September 20, 1917 and has been a significant center for motion picture and television production. Thomas Ince built the first film studio in 1918; Hal Roach as well as Metro Goldwyn Mayer followed soon after, and built studios in the 1920s. In addition to these major studios, the Hughes Aircraft Company was also headquartered in this city from 1932 to 1985. Today, Culver City's population is estimated at 38,816.
