Description
Caucasian male, born on June 5, 1908 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of Quaker antecedents. His lifelong association with pacifist groups including Quakers, Fellowship of Reconciliation, and Union Theological Seminary imbued in him a strong sense of social justice and compassion. As a Conscientious Objector he was assigned to the United Service Organizations (USO) in Phoenix, Arizona during WWII. In November 1944 Mr. Hammaker, at age thirty-six, was asked by the USO to speak to 900 parents of soldiers in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team at Gila River Relocation Center in Arizona. He spoke on Challenges to Leadership in Wartime Communities. He was against internment as it set a precedent for a government to liquidate undesirable minorities
