Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated October 12, 1962 reads, "Four years ago brown-eyed Rita San Carlo was fighting for her life in a Hollywood hospital. The youngster, daughter of Mr. and Mario San Carlo of Van Nuys, was born three months premature and weighed only 1 pound 9 ounces. Doctors gave her a slim chance of surviving and kept her in an incubator for 2 1/2 months. Today, bright-eyed Rita is a happy, healthy child who just celebrated her fourth birthday with her classmates at the Sherwood Preschool in Van Nuys. The school provided the cake for the youngsters, and chest-nut haired Rita proved to be an amiable hostess and a seasoned gourmet. After her tussle with the cake, she found enough energy to open the gifts from her playmates."; See images #00125188 through #00125191 for all photos in this series.
