Description
This 1925 photograph shows the façade of the 41-unit Merrium Apartments at 1017 Fourteenth Street. A roadster sits to the lower right of the frame and hanging over the building’s entryway is a massive eave. The building’s architect, etched as C.C. Cuff in the lower, right-hand corner of the photograph, was Canadian-born Clarence Cecil Cuff. Cuff lived well into his 90s, designing everything from, as he put it, “bordellos to shrines.” Some of his notable works included the Diepenbrock Theater, the Travelers Hotel, the Greek Orthodox Church on Alhambra Boulevard, the Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Fifty-Eighth Street, and several academic buildings at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
